Carer’s Week 2024: Hollie’s Story

This year’s theme for Carer’s Week is “Putting Carers on the Map” and in this blog we shine a spotlight on Hollie, our Sales Administrator and Office Supervisor who not only provides day-to-day customer service from our Hereford HQ but also works as a part-time carer outside of Chunc. Hollie shares her perspective on life as a carer, the impact this has had on her personal and professional development, the importance of Carer’s Week, and how carers should be recognised every day for their invaluable contribution to society.

I began my journey as a carer at 16, when starting my early years diploma to get clinical knowledge of the care sector. I very quickly fell in love with the way that caring for someone made me feel. I would go home feeling happy and satisfied that I managed to make someone’s day that little bit better.

I love how diverse being a carer can be. From my previous roles in the nursing home, the smallest action can make someone’s day that little bit brighter. From providing them with a warm cup of tea to providing comfort in someone’s final moments – make a big difference. Not only does this support the person being cared for directly but is so important for their families – knowing that there is someone there who genuinely cares.

As a residential support worker, I learned that it’s the people who make the job great. Despite the challenges, planning days out for residents and seeing their joy – whether organising trips to the zoo or going to the beach was incredibly rewarding. It’s about treasuring moments that others may take for granted.

Caring has taught me empathy, passion, and understanding. It has become an integral part of who I am. I look forward to every shift, knowing I can make someone’s life a little bit brighter. All carers need to be celebrated this week – every carer is amazing and important!
