Our Story

The story of Chunc began with a family’s determination to create better seating solutions for Sophie

The beginning

Sophie was born severely disabled and later diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. As she grew, her family managed with regular strollers until she was around eight years old, when specialised seating became necessary.

However, it quickly became clear that wheelchairs designed for children were creating new challenges rather than solving them.

Sophie struggled to find the right postural support. The chairs were often difficult for carers to manoeuvre, awkward to transport, and lacked the thoughtful design needed to support everyday life with dignity.

Concerns and suggestions shared with manufacturers were largely unanswered, which inspired the family to start searching for a better way.

Turning the idea into reality

Sophie’s father decided to take action.

With the family’s background in aerospace manufacturing and engineering, they applied technical expertise to rethink children’s mobility seating. The aim was to create a significant step forward in functionality, styling, and usability.

The family invested heavily in product design, combining rigorous engineering principles with a human-centred approach to mobility.

The result was an innovative wheelchair design, later patented in both Europe and the United States, helping to revolutionise children’s wheelchairs by focusing on comfort, practicality, and quality of life.

still at the heart of chunc

Today, Sophie – the original inspiration and first “test pilot” – is in her mid-thirties and continues to sit comfortably in a Chunc wheelchair, more than twenty years after that first moment of insight.
