What is short term wheelchair rental?
Short-term wheelchair rental gives you access to specialist seating for the period your family member needs it, without having to buy equipment that may only be required during recovery. Our Spica rental service is designed to support children and young people who need specialist seating temporarily following surgery, injury, trauma or during rehabilitation. The aim is to help the person be comfortable, supported and able to get on with everyday life while they recover.
Who might benefit from a short-term wheelchair rental?
Every person is different, but rental may be worth considering if your family member:
They may already use a wheelchair, or they may be using specialist seating for the first time.
Do we need to buy a wheelchair?
No. If the need is temporary, rental can give you access to specialist seating without committing to a permanent purchase. Rentals are available from 3 weeks, with flexibility where the equipment is needed for longer.
How quickly can we get a rental wheelchair?
Once the appropriate chair and configuration have been confirmed, we aim to arrange delivery and setup within 5 working days. We can arrange delivery and setup at home or in hospital, depending on your circumstances.
How do we know which chair is right?
We’ll ask about your family member, what has happened, what support they need and what you hope the chair will help them do. This information helps us understand the appropriate chair and configuration.
What does the rental include?
We’ll explain exactly what is included before you decide to proceed. The rental includes the agreed chair and configuration, along with the practical support and management of the equipment throughout the rental. We’ll also explain delivery, setup, servicing, maintenance and collection so you know what to expect.
What if my child’s needs change?
Recovery can change quickly. If your family member’s needs change during the rental, get in touch with us. We’ll help you understand what options are available and, where appropriate, work with the clinical team involved.
Can we self-fund a short-term wheelchair rental?
Yes. We can work directly with families who are funding the rental themselves. We’ll explain the rental costs and what is included before you decide to proceed.
What happens at the end of the rental?
We’ll talk you through what happens next. Your family member may no longer need the chair, you may need to extend the rental, or the experience may have helped you and the clinical team understand what support is needed longer term. If the chair is no longer required, we’ll arrange collection with you.
Do you ask families for feedback?
Yes. At the end of the rental, we ask families to share their experience with us, including what difference the chair made and anything that could have been better. We do this because you experience the equipment every day. Your feedback can tell us things that aren’t always visible in a clinical appointment. We use this learning to improve our service and contribute to our annual impact reporting. Where appropriate, relevant outcomes can also be shared with the clinical team.
What if we have questions before deciding?
That’s completely fine. You don’t have to know exactly what you need before talking to us. Tell us a little about your family member and we’ll help you understand whether short-term rental could be suitable.
