Purpose and clinical scope
The Spica Rental Service provides temporary specialist seating for patients whose postural, pressure management, mobility or functional needs require individually configured seating during a defined period of recovery, rehabilitation or clinical treatment.
The service is designed to support patients across hospital, discharge and community pathways where seating is required for a limited or uncertain period and where timely access to an appropriate seating solution is clinically important.
The service operates in conjunction with, and under the direction of, the prescribing clinical team. The prescribing clinician or clinical team retains responsibility for establishing the patient’s clinical need and prescribing the appropriate seating requirements. Our role is to translate that prescription into a safe, correctly configured and quality-assured seating solution, and to manage the equipment and associated service throughout the patient’s episode of care.
The service therefore combines specialist seating expertise with equipment provision, configuration, fitting, logistics, technical support, maintenance, recovery and infection control.
From prescription to outcome:
The clinical objective
The objective is to ensure that the patient has access to an appropriate, correctly configured and quality-assured seating solution at the point it is clinically required, with appropriate support throughout the period of use.
For the clinical team, this provides a single managed service around the equipment element of the patient’s pathway – reducing operational and logistical burden while maintaining clear clinical responsibility and communication.
The value of the service is therefore not simply the provision of a chair. It is the managed clinical seating pathway surrounding that chair; from prescription and preparation, through fitting and ongoing support, to recovery, decontamination and controlled re-use.
